Are you looking to upgrade your TV this year? Black Friday is one of the biggest times of year for great discounts on the newest TVs. However, is it really the best time of the year to buy a new TV?

TVs can be an expensive purchase. However, in addition to Black Friday, there are actually two other great times each year when you can score big savings on a new TV.

Why You Should Wait Two Months to Purchase a TV

Though it may seem tempting to rush to buy a new TV this Black Friday, you may actually want to wait two months. According to Consumer Reports, TVs aren’t at their cheapest prices during the holiday season. Instead, it’s better to wait until Super Bowl weekend, which takes place at the end of January or early February.

If you can wait two months, it’s possible that you could score an even better deal on a TV, including all the latest smart TVs.

It’s known that both large and small retailers release discounts on TVs in weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. Retailers know how many people watch the big game – according to Nielsen data, 111.3 million people in America watched the Super Bowl last year. And the end of January is the perfect time of year for retailers to entice customers to upgrade their current TV.

According to NerdWallet, if you wait, you’re likely to see deals on 49-inch to 65-inch TVs.

You’ll See More Discounts During TV Release Cycle

You can also choose to wait a little longer to see similar TV discounts. During the spring (March or April), new TVs models hit the market – so retailers want to clear out their current inventory in order to make room.

Once these new models come out, you’ll most likely see prior year’s models on sale. If you okay with getting an older model, then expect to see close out deals all the way into the summer.

If you can wait until the TV release cycle, you could end up saving quite a lot.

It’s Possible to Get a Good Deal on Black Friday

If you can’t wait to buy a new TV, then Black Friday may be your best bet to get a decent TV at a discount – however, the discounts won’t be as great as what you can get after the holidays, you can still come out on top if you know where to look.

Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target are known to offer doorbuster deals on TVs, but it’s important to act fast because these deals go fast. According to NerdWallet, Black Friday deals in the past have seen TVs sets sold for about 50 percent off their original ticket price.

TV Buying Tips

Though the time of year does matter when you’re in the market for a new TV, it’s also important to consider the following three tips when shopping for a TV.

Tip #1

Always look for price matching. It’s important to always be aware of each retailer’s price matching policy – there are some stores that may refund you the difference if the price drops within a certain period. Black Friday is usually excluded from this offer.

Tip #2

Spend time researching. Most retailers put out a weekly or bi-weekly ad that showcases all their current deals – if you can’t buy a new TV in the timeframe we discussed above, make sure to constantly check retailers’ ads because you still might be able to find deals.

Tip #3

After you’ve spent time researching, shop in-store. TVs are always going to look better in person – though you can read specs online, actually seeing the picture quality in person may be a game changer.
