How Does Stroke Affect The BrainA stroke is a condition that occurs when the brain cells die as the result of a lack of blood flow to the brain. It is sometimes referred to as a brain attack. There are three main regions of the brain, the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. The effects of a stroke depend on the region of the brain that is affected. Below are some effects that a stroke can have on the brain:

Effects On the Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain. It is responsible for integrating neural functions and complex sensory functions. The cerebrum is divided into two regions, the left hemisphere and right hemisphere. If the stroke affects the right hemisphere of the brain, then the person is likely to experience right-sided weakness, memory problems, vision problems, behavioral changes and paralysis on the right side of the body.

If the stroke affects the right side of the cerebrum, then a person can experience the following left-sided weakness, speech problems, vision problems, paralysis, inability to read or write and memory problems.

Effects On the Cerebellum

The cerebellum is the portion of the brain that controls motor function. Researchers believe that it may also play a role in language, attention and other cognitive functions. Strokes that affect the cerebellum region are less common. However, they can have a devastating effect on a person.

People who have a stroke that affects their cerebellum are likely to experience problems with coordination and balance. They may also experience ataxia, which is the full loss of control of bodily movements. Other symptoms that a person may experience if the stroke affects the cerebellum occur include headaches, dizziness and vomiting.

Effects On the Brain Stem

The brain stem is the stem-like part that is located at the base of the brain. It controls vital functions, such as the breathing, blood pressure and heartbeat. A stroke that affects the brain stem can potentially be life-threatening. If the stroke affects the brain stem, then a person is likely to experience breathing problems, heart problems, paralysis and coma. They may also have problems swallowing or chewing. Furthermore, they may have trouble regulating their body temperature.

Even though a stroke can have devastating effects, early treatment can greatly improve a patient’s prognosis. That is why people who are thinking that they are having a stroke, then they should see a physician as soon as possible.
